Fueled by the Vision 2030, Saudi Arabia's ambitious National Renewable Energy Program (NREP) is leading the green transition of the country away from fossil fuels. As the location of the world's largest onshore wind power project, the initiative is calling for groundbreaking solutions to accommodate thousands of workers safely and productively in one of the most severe environments on Earth.
Being the team behind the fully functional modular container camp in Saudi Arabia, Suzhou Zhongnan took the responsibility for contributing our expertise and experience in the field to the project, which is 3GW (3 gigawatts-3 × 10鈦?watts) of electrical power capacity. The container camp is designed and constructed as a place of comfort, safety, and operational efficiency for all personnel.

The NREP initiative had circumstances that were quite unusual, given that it was situated in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Surface temperatures in this city can go as high as 60°C, and it is not unusual to have sandstorms and strong winds. Designing a modular camp in such an environment requires a careful balance between structural robustness, compliance, and occupant comfort.
To provide accommodation for 2,000 staff, the North Camp was split into four main operational areas or modules, as shown below:
|
Module |
Purpose |
Key Features |
|
Living Area |
Dormitories, canteens, and medical stations |
Fire-resistant doors and flooring, toughened glass windows, designed to withstand sandstorms, and interiors with controlled temperature |
|
Office Area |
Project management center and monitoring room |
A strong central location for the coordination, scheduling, and supervision of the 3GW wind power project |
|
Storage & Logistics |
Wind turbine components and spare parts |
Dedicated platforms for loading/unloading, highly efficient storage channels |
|
Construction Support |
Repair workshop and temporary power station |
On-site equipment support to ensure smooth construction over a 37 km project area |

This modular system design makes it possible to combine the functions of living, working, and operational support seamlessly, while it also allows for flexibility to accommodate future changes.
Building a modular container camp in Saudi Arabia is an advanced engineering project that involves creating a structure that can survive harsh desert conditions.
Extremely High Temperatures: The walls contain 75mm fire-resistant and heat-insulating panels, whereas the roofs have been upgraded with 100mm fire-resistant materials for the better efficiency of the air-conditioning system.
Sandstorms and Strong Winds: Specially made doors and windows have features like better sealing, aluminum alloy strips for corrosion resistance, and stainless-steel locks for long-lasting use.
Fire Safety: Doors and flooring are fire-resistant for more than 1 hour in order to provide safety to the personnel.
Durability: Cement board flooring gives the property the ability to withstand long-term residential and usage in high-traffic areas.
Besides, the individual units were fine-tuned by leveraging historical and real-time local climate data of the local climate conditions so that the HVAC systems could be relied upon to work continuously even in extreme heat.

Entirely, the camp is built in accordance with the local building standards, international safety regulations, and operational guidelines. Some of the main facility features that adhere to the regulations are:
Such steps not only ensure safety and comfort but also boost confidence in our modular solutions for large-scale renewable energy projects.
Going for a modular container camp as big as this one in a remote desert area meant facing several difficulties:
Our Solutions:
We were able to run a large-scale delivery and installation smoothly, thanks to our production capacity of 200 container houses per day, and this was the kind of demonstration that we could handle national-level projects, too.

Choosing our modular container solutions offers clients a variety of strategic benefits:
These benefits have positioned Suzhou Zhongnan as a reliable partner for modular container camps in Saudi Arabia and other harsh environments worldwide.
The modular container camp in Saudi Arabia showcases the potential of modular construction solutions to assist huge renewable energy projects by offering safe, comfortable, and operationally efficient living and working spaces.
Suzhou Zhongnan demonstrated that their camp could accommodate 2,000 employees and cater to their needs. Also, it could endure the severe desert climate through the combination of advanced design, strict compliance, and expert project management.
This initiative further strengthens the idea that modular housing can be extremely valuable for infrastructure projects on a national level. It also reflects our commitment to deliver dependable, customized, and high-quality solutions worldwide.
