A primary school in Leyte, Philippines needed classrooms due to the fast-growing student population in the school. In about 14 weeks, they needed six more classrooms built before the next school year. The site was located in a coastal region which was prone to seasonal typhoons and the access was very limited for heavy equipment to support conventional construction methods. Therefore, it was nearly impossible to construct these additional classrooms using standard building methods within either the time or the budget.
Being a modular classroom supplier, ZN House was assigned by the school for a prefab classroom program utilizing containers. Six classroom modules were built in the factory so that they contained insulated walls, pre-wired electrical circuits, reinforced aluminum framed windows, and exterior siding materials made of corrosion-resistant materials designed specifically for use in the coastal salt atmosphere. They were manufactured as stackable units, allowing them to be combined to create a two-story structure, thereby maximizing the school’s already small building footprint.
The foundation was made up of reinforced concrete piers set to accommodate both the loads of the module and the site-derived soil conditions. The modules were lifted into position by crane over two days and then bolted to the anchor points. The seams were sealed and the interior finish work was completed within 1 week. These efficiencies enabled the school to be ready for occupancy in 11 weeks, 3 weeks before the scheduled start of the school year, and to receive all six classrooms.
