In contrast to traditional portable toilets, modular container toilet systems are erected on an extremely durable frame, often made from galvanized steel, preventing corrosion. The walls of the units consist of high-density sandwich panels made with either Rockwool or EPS, for maximum insulation, providing both thermal and acoustic properties.

Each modular restroom unit has been designed for "plug and play" installation. All plumbing, electrical wiring, and waste disposal systems have been pre-installed in a factory before shipment; therefore, upon arrival at your job site, they only need to be connected to local utility services or an external holding tank. According to the Modular Building Institute, “modular construction can generate as much as 90% less onsite waste than site-built systems” (MBI, 2023). They can be set up as all-male units or all-female, but can also be configured with male/female units or with incorporated shower facilities. Why Choose a Container Toilet?

The benefits of using container toilets far exceed traditional portable toilets or on-site construction toilets. Their steel construction makes them more durable, while the washability of their interior surfaces provides better sanitation and lower maintenance costs. They typically last 10 - 20 years, compared to only 3 - 5 years for standard portable toilets. Additionally, because container toilets are created within a modular container frame, there is much greater flexibility in designing the unit's layout, fixtures, ventilation, and insulation. Container toilets will also withstand harsh climate conditions while providing superior structural integrity and comfort to the user. Even though container toilets are heavier than portable toilets, they do offer some mobility, but provide an overall stronger, longer-term sanitation solution than portable toilets. Container toilets also contribute to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in providing safe sanitation solutions to poorly served or unserved areas. A research study conducted by the United Nations indicates that modular sanitation systems have the potential to improve the health of populations living in developing countries (UN Water, 2022).

Case Study: Deploying Sanitation in Remote Environments

Project Overview

As a Senior Project Manager, I have managed projects where I have deployed a container toilet block containing 20 units for an industrial camp in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This was in an area that experienced high humidity and lacked access to skilled tradespeople for the required maintenance and service.

The Challenge

The greatest difficulty was with the transportation logistics of the challenging landscape and finding a transportation system that could function without being reliant upon a municipal sewer system. Also, because of the weather conditions in the area, an adequate solution could not create too much "heat pocket" for the workers.

The Solution

The engineering staff developed unique forty-foot containers that incorporate high-density Rockwool for insulation to address the tropical climate. They developed a closed-loop system that uses external holding tanks to make it easier to remove waste from these units.

I was responsible for managing the installation and assembly of the units by using galvanised heavy-duty frame construction to help the units stand up to the vibration from the shipping process and the deterioration caused by the climate. This resulted in a cleaner, temperature-controlled work environment for the 150 employees at the job site and improved their quality of life dramatically.

Ans: Most of the units come with complete assembly. Once your ground is levelled off and you have prepared your basic foundation (concrete pad or even level soil), you can usually connect to your water and electric services within a few hours.

Ans: Yes. Industrial bathrooms are built to last, but the luxury of a container bathroom can be customized to meet any aesthetic; this means that if you want ceramics and tiles in a designer finish, then you will have a top-of-the-line bathroom rental for VIP restrooms in a festival environment or a corporate event.

  1. Are container toilets easy to clean and maintain?

Ans: Units made from non-porous materials (i.e., aluminium checker plate flooring and PVC wall cladding) are easy to clean. You can use any standard industrial cleaner, and you will not damage the surfaces.

One of the clear trends emerging from the construction industry worldwide is the move from short-term modular sanitation facilities to longer-term (semi-permanent) facilities.
