After the devastating earthquakes in southern Turkey in February 2023, aid organizations and private-sector partners urgently needed shelter for hundreds of thousands of displaced people in the Hatay area at the same time and extensively.
The scale of the project, combined with the tight schedule, was daunting. The team leaders had to arrange for hundreds of working units to be set up at different locations with very little time for installation and hardly any engineering done on the spot. The coordination of various installation crews, the organization of truck movement, and the adjustment to different site conditions turned this project into one of the most challenging rapid-deployment operations in recent history with operations.
To meet the logistical challenges of the crisis, ZN House developed and delivered a modular strategy based on standardization. They used the same model of living units that were made in the factory, enabling them to install the units simultaneously at different sites. With sanitary and kitchen modules already assembled, the need for doing any on-site work for these modules was eliminated. ZN House's logistics team also came up with the schedule to help them make the most out of the truckloads and the staging. That means multiple installation teams could work at the same time without disturbing each other. The units were constructed of heavy-duty steel frames and sandwich panels with insulation. The panels were prepared in the factory and so they were immediately ready for use upon delivery.
Across the Hatay region, 850 emergency living units were deployed. Compared to the use of tents, the distribution of the aid became quicker and better organized.
